When to Call in a Home Heating Pro

Propane is great for home heating

There is nothing quite like the comfort of a warm home during a Pennsylvania winter. Whether you are in Delaware County or one of the surrounding towns, you rely on your heating system to keep your family safe and comfortable when the temperature drops.

Propane remains a top choice for homeowners in our area because it is efficient, clean-burning, and reliable. However, even the best systems require attention now and then. While routine maintenance keeps things running smoothly, knowing exactly when to pick up the phone for professional help can save you money on energy bills and prevent costly breakdowns.

Signs Your Heating System Needs Attention

Your heating system often gives you clues before it fails completely. Paying attention to these warning signs can help you address issues before they leave you in the cold.

• Strange noises: It is normal for a heater to make a low hum, but loud banging, clanking, or screeching sounds are cause for concern. These noises often indicate loose parts, motor failure, or airflow obstructions. If your quiet system suddenly gets noisy, it is time to have it checked.
• The smell of gas or burning: If you smell a “rotten egg” odor, you may have a propane leak. This is an immediate safety hazard. Leave the area immediately, extinguish any open flames, and call your propane provider or emergency services from a safe location. If you smell burning dust when you first turn the heat on for the season, that is usually normal. However, a persistent burning smell could indicate an electrical issue or a clogged filter.
• Higher energy bills: Have your energy costs spiked without a significant change in the weather or your usage habits? A sudden increase in fuel consumption suggests your system is working harder than it should to maintain the temperature, often due to dirty filters or worn-out components.
• Uneven heating: If some rooms are freezing while others are sweltering, your system isn’t distributing air properly. This could be an issue with your ductwork, the thermostat, or the heating unit itself.
• A yellow pilot light: Your propane flame should burn a crisp blue. A yellow or flickering flame indicates the propane isn’t burning completely, which can lead to carbon monoxide buildup. This requires immediate professional attention.

Simple heating system maintenance you can do yourself

While major repairs require a technician, there are steps you can take to keep your system efficient.

• Change your air filters: This is the most important DIY task. A clogged filter restricts airflow, forcing the system to work harder and increasing your bills. Check them monthly during winter.
• Keep vents clear: Ensure furniture, curtains, or rugs aren’t blocking your vents. Your system needs to “breathe” to circulate heat effectively.
• Check your thermostat: Sometimes the issue is just a dead battery in your thermostat or an incorrect setting.
